Why is it important to publish data into research papers?
HABs Watch Project leader Dr. Deo Florence Onda has always emphasized that it is part of every scientist and researcher’s role to share their data and findings. One way to do this is through research papers and publications. The HABs Watch Project, as the largest consortium of state universities and colleges (SUCs) in a project, is expected to yield a lot of research papers.
After extensive data gathering over the past year and a half, it is now time to focus on processing the information collected by the project and produce research papers that can contribute to the existing data worldwide. The project is set to produce at least 25 research papers, categorized into three tiers--national, regional and individual studies. Research papers are further classified into four clusters--culture and IFCB cluster, molecular cluster, toxin and omics cluster and social science and machine learning cluster.
The wealth of information gathered by the project has always been for the benefit of the people and it is only right to give back and share the knowledge to the public. Aside from the research papers, the project will also publish a Guidebook on Philippine Marine Phytoplankton, a website and mobile application dedicated to HABs information, two children's books on harmful algal blooms and other educational materials.
This reinforces the purpose and significance of conducting research--to contribute to the wealth of knowledge and information and to help us better understand this phenomenon that continues to impact many people in the country. It is the scientists and researchers’ role to serve the people through research and share it with the people it impacts the most.
