HABs Watch at MSU-Naawan

Dr. Deo Florence Onda shares his thoughts on the project after the conclusion of the HABs Watch Project's Fieldwork, Culture and Isolation Workshop at Mindanao State University at Naawan.

Unknown to many, HABs Watch Project was 4 years in the making. The proposal was submitted in 2018 to the then PCARI CHED (now LAKAS CHED) and has undergone several revisions and review. It started with a consortium of 4 universities, which has now expanded to 10. It started with very simple goals, which evolved to become more ambitious.

The workshop in MSU Naawan was the very first time that the collaborators met face-to-face, allowing us to go beyond the smiles and greetings in zoom. In this workshop, the group has set clear directions to achieve our goals in the next two years. We've identified the scientific questions, designed the experiments and sampling campaigns, determined our weaknesses, and promised to help and support each other.

Clearly, the HABs Watch Team is ready to not only provide science-based solutions to societal problems such as HABs, but to also contribute to the development of Science, Technology, and Innovation in the country.

HABs Watch Team includes:

The UP Marine Science Institute

Mariano Marcos State University

Central Luzon State University

UP Baguio

Palawan State University

Western Philippines

UP Tacloban College

Mindanao State University - Naawan

Zamboanga State College of Marine Science and Technology

University of California - Santa Cruz

We've just started.
